Captured by the blue grass on the lawn
we lay in the sunshine of banjo rhythms
harmonica and Kentucky pain and pleasure
gathers our world in the shambles of a grind
guttural delivered from a foot stomping stage
you can’t bury us in the memory of winter spent
it is a sweet Indian summer, sticky upon our lips
that golden sun, it does fall, and brings us into
a river of soul and a cappella polished rocks
of prayer upon the whisper of love wrapped
in a smile that clipity-clops for a country mile
picks, plucks and pulls me onto my feet
and we dance with a thousand strangers
holding onto a dream, we live today, because
just because, I love you, swept away on a melody
that promises the simple gifts of freedom of we
oh, will you come away, come away, with me,
into some place, into the night, into tomorrow.

Today’s prompt: Day Fifteen: Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem inspired by your favorite kind of music. Try to recreate the sounds and timing of a pop ballad, a jazz improvisation, or a Bach fugue. That could mean incorporating refrains, neologisms and flights of whimsy, or repeating/inverting lines or ideas – whatever your chosen musical form would seem to require! Perhaps a good way to start is to listen to your favorite piece of music and “free-write” for the duration of the piece, and then use what you’ve written as the building blocks for your poem

AND your photos rock, too.

Thank you. I think they captured the moment beautifully too. I’m also very fortunate to have a patient muse who lets me take too many pictures wherever we go.

Thank you to your muse! I’m lucky to have a watchmaker who doesn’t keep track of the time when I write poetry, too.

Ususally, I try to pick out favorite lines but I couldn’t today — I liked ’em all!

Thank you Elizabeth. I was sort of dreading this challenge … so I began looking through my photo albums for anything that was musical related that I could use as an anchor. Once I had that, I closed my eyes and listened for music that might have been on that grass and let my fingers almost find the rhythm in my head and it just flowed. You can believe I was as surprised as anyone at what landed on my page ….

Well. That explains it!
