Eats

My homage to all things that provide pleasure by passing the lips … or which relate to preparation of this oh special sacrament in life. On this page, you’ll read about the obvious, food and the recipes that construct the tastes, but also about the places that prepare it (e.g. restaurants), literature about it (e.g. cookbooks), and tools essential to the preparation. But you’ll also find a few special topics of focus which if they aren’t “eats” then are a close pairing to them: wine and its cousin, beer.

Thank you for the info. We have a 12 yr old lab mix she has been battling high levels in her blood work that now looks like she is in kidney and liver failure She has lost a lot of weight and so we were sent your info by a holistic vet that I had contacted. I make the recipe for her … she loved it. we then got some of the supplements and added to it and still ate for a day .. now sticks her nose up.

Questions – before the recipe.. we tried boiled beef. didn’t agree with her so switched to bison. Any thoughts about bison?

She had been on a hydrolyzed protein dry dog good -worked until about 6 months ago. Tried the canned hydrolyzed protein worked for about 2 cans then wouldn’t eat it. Would it seem ok if we tried mixing the canned with the veggies?

For the rice we have used minute rice. – is that ok or should it be regular rice.

    Thank you.

Thanks Peggy. A few others have gone down the bison road as well and/or asked questions about it. Looking at the comparative numbers of bison vs. beef would suggest it is not a good alternative and is higher in phosphorus as shown here: http://www.dietandfitnesstoday.com/phosphorus-in-bison.php. I can’t speak to the canned protein. My only advice is look at the nutrient/mineral breakdown and do your best to compare to alternatives. Also haven’t studied minute rice, but my guess is that parboiled rice has lower nutritional properties which have been stripped out in the pre-boil, so it is quite likely in my logical brain that it may be a good ingredient choice as well … but again, do your nutrient breakdown to confirm.
