The one of the things that I love most about photography is that it grounds me in the moment and gives me pause …. In that space, there is a possibility to see the world and see it different: in this case, the earth itself. I don’t think I’m particularly remarkable because I took a picture of the ground. Truly, I’ve taken a lot of pictures of the ground, some without even realizing my camera was pointed there. But in this moment, the moss covered earth was split and I stopped, paused, and explored the space.
Perspective in some ways can be described as “focus.” It depends upon what we focus that reveals what we see. Do you see the ground, the moss, the peaty soil yearning for water? Or do you see a crack and wonder what lives in the space between? In this case, I literally changed the focus on my lens and took the same picture again ….
The crack, holding the moist humus of the years, grows in contrast surrounded by a Matisse-like foreground.
Stand back and focus on the whole, the world becomes so much more ordinary, just another step on a morning hike.
